Description

Found a lump under your skin? Two common causes are lipomas and skin cysts. Although both can appear as small, painless bumps, they are different conditions and may require different treatment.

What Is a Lipoma?

A lipoma is a usually benign growth made of fatty tissue beneath the skin. It generally feels soft or doughy, moves slightly when touched and grows slowly. Lipomas commonly appear on the back, shoulders, neck, arms and thighs.

Small lipomas that cause no symptoms may only need observation. Removal may be considered if a lipoma causes discomfort, grows, affects movement or creates concern about the diagnosis.

What Is a Skin Cyst?

A common type of skin cyst, called an epidermoid cyst, forms a sac beneath the skin containing keratin and other cellular material. It often feels like a rounded, well-defined lump and may have a small opening on the skin's surface.

A cyst can become inflamed or infected, causing redness, swelling, tenderness or pain. Avoid squeezing or puncturing it at home, as this may worsen inflammation or cause infection.

Lipoma vs Cyst: Key Differences

Contents: A lipoma consists of fatty tissue; an epidermoid cyst contains keratin-rich material.

Feel: A lipoma is often soft and slightly mobile; a cyst may feel firmer and more defined.

Skin opening: A cyst may have a small central pore, whereas a lipoma typically does not.

Inflammation: A cyst can become red, swollen or painful when inflamed or infected.

Treatment: Management depends on the diagnosis, symptoms, size and location. Removal may be recommended for selected cases.

These features are clues, not a reliable way to self-diagnose. A medical examination—and sometimes an ultrasound or other investigation—may be needed.

When Should You Get a Lump Checked?

Arrange medical evaluation if a lump grows quickly, feels hard or fixed, becomes painful, or changes in appearance. A red, hot or increasingly painful lump also needs prompt assessment.
